Coffeecake, Apple-Chocolate Chip (D, TNT)

Yield: 16 pieces

6 medium apples, peeled and cut into 1/2" slices
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1 egg
1 cup sugar
1 cup flour, sifted
1 tsp. cinnamon or 1 tbsp. apple brandy
1/4 tsp. salt
4 ounces cream cheese
4 tbsp. sour or whipping cream

Mix cream cheese and sour or whipping cream.

Place the apple slices in an 8" square baking pan. Sprinkle with the chocolate chips.

Beat the egg until fluffy, add the sugar gradually and then add the flour, salt, and cinnamon or apple brandy and the cream cheese previously mixed with the sour or sweet cream. Pour this batter over the apples and the chocolate chips.

Bake in a preheated 350° oven for 30 minutes. Serve hot or at room temperature, plain or with vanilla ice cream.

This is from my friend Fae Stern who says it is her best recipe which is saying a lot because she is an extraordinary cook. This wonderful pudding cake, as did Fae, originated in Brussels.
